Disability Policy
INTRODUCTION
Cambridge Performing Arts recognises its statutory obligations regarding disability as described in the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and the 2001 Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA). The company will continually analyse its practices to ensure it is meeting these obligations. The main requirements are to ensure that:
- Disabled people are not treated 'less favourably' than non-disabled people for reasons related to their disability without 'justification'
- That we make 'reasonable adjustment' to ensure that disabled people are not placed at a 'substantial disadvantage'
Reasonable adjustments might include:
- Changing admissions, administrative and examination procedures
- Changing course content
- Changing physical features and premises
- Changing teaching arrangements
- Providing additional teaching
- Providing communication and support services
- Offering information in alternative formats
- Training for staff
IMPLEMENTATION
The college will put this statement into practice by:
- Providing applicants with the opportunity to inform us of any disability or learning difficulties at application
- Providing applicants with the opportunity to make us aware of any special access requirements before audition
- Providing new students with the opportunity to inform us of any disability or learning difficulty at registration and again at induction
- Providing students with access to the Learning Support Officer who will identify their needs in an initial interview and meet with them on a regular basis to ensure those needs are being met by the college to the best of its ability
- Make physical access improvements where possible or identify improvements that are required and address them in future planning
- Provide staff with appropriate training
ENFORCEMENT
Any direct or indirect discrimination, victimisation and harassment is a very serious matter and any student or staff member who fails to comply with the equal opportunities, race equality or disability policies will be subject to the appropriate Disciplinary Procedure.
All staff and students are encouraged to be vigilant and report any act that they feel contravenes this policy to their personal tutor/line manager or the Principal.
